An Inexact Proximal Path-Following Algorithm for Constrained Convex Minimization

چکیده
Many scientific and engineering applications feature large-scale non-smooth convex minimization problems over convex sets. In this paper, we address an important instance of this broad class where we assume that the non-smooth objective is equipped with a tractable proximity operator and that the convex constraints afford a self-concordant barrier. We provide a new joint treatment of proximal and self-concordant barrier concepts and illustrate that such problems can be efficiently solved without lifting problem dimensions. We propose an inexact path-following algorithmic framework and theoretically characterize the worst case convergence as well as computational complexity of this framework, and also analyze its behavior when the proximal subproblems are solved inexactly. To illustrate our framework, we apply its instances to both synthetic and real-world applications and illustrate their accuracy and scalability in large-scale settings. As an added bonus, we describe how our framework can obtain points on the Pareto frontier of regularized problems with self-concordant objectives in a tuning free fashion.

An Accelerated Inexact Proximal Point Algorithm for Convex Minimization
The proximal point algorithm (PPA) is classical and popular in the community of Optimization. In practice, inexact PPAs which solves the involved proximal subproblems approximately subject to certain inexact criteria are truly implementable. In this paper, we first propose an inexact PPA with a new inexact criterion for solving convex minimization, and show that the iteration-complexity of this...
متن کاملSpectral projected gradient and variable metric methods for optimization with linear inequalities
A family of variable metric methods for convex constrained optimization was introduced recently by Birgin, Mart́ınez and Raydan. One of the members of this family is the Inexact Spectral Projected Gradient (ISPG) method for minimization with convex constraints. At each iteration of these methods a strictly convex quadratic function with convex constraints must be (inexactly) minimized. In the ca...

The accelerated proximal gradient (APG) method, first proposed by Nesterov for minimizing smooth convex functions, later extended by Beck and Teboulle to composite convex objective functions, and studied in a unifying manner by Tseng, has proven to be highly efficient in solving some classes of large scale structured convex optimization (possibly nonsmooth) problems, including nuclear norm mini...
متن کاملGlobal convergence of an inexact interior-point method for convex quadratic symmetric cone programming
In this paper, we propose a feasible interior-point method for convex quadratic programming over symmetric cones. The proposed algorithm relaxes the accuracy requirements in the solution of the Newton equation system, by using an inexact Newton direction. Furthermore, we obtain an acceptable level of error in the inexact algorithm on convex quadratic symmetric cone programmin...
متن کاملInexact Spectral Projected Gradient Methods on Convex Sets
A new method is introduced for large scale convex constrained optimization. The general model algorithm involves, at each iteration, the approximate minimization of a convex quadratic on the feasible set of the original problem and global convergence is obtained by means of nonmonotone line searches. A specific algorithm, the Inexact Spectral Projected Gradient method (ISPG), is implemented usi...
